Gigabyte optical modules can be divided into two categories, namely, single fiber and dual fiber optical module. Single fiber refers to only one interface, which can be transmitted by using only one fiber. The interface type of Gigabit single fiber optical module is LC&SC and the fiber type is single mode. It can be transmitted to 160km by matching OS2 single-mode fiber patch cord.
Dual fiber refers to two interfaces, one receiving and one transmitting, which need to use two optical fibers for transmission. The interface type of dual fiber optical module is duplex LC, and the optical fiber types are single-mode and multi-mode. Gigabit multimode optical module is used together with OM2 multimode fiber patch cord, and the maximum transmission distance can reach 550 meters. The Gigabit single-mode optical module can be used together with OS2 single-mode optical fiber patch cord, and the maximum transmission distance can reach 160km.
In order to adapt to more application environment, gigabit optical module can choose a variety of operating temperatures. If it is applied to outdoor environment with changeable temperature in four seasons, it is necessary to choose the operating temperature range of industrial (-40℃-85℃) or extended (-20℃-85℃). If it is used in the indoor environment such as the enterprise computer room, you only need to choose the commercial (0℃-70℃) working temperature range, because the indoor computer room is equipped with air conditioning, and the temperature fluctuation is small.
The biggest difference between Gigabit dual fiber optical module and Gigabit single fiber optical module is the number of optical fibers used. Dual fiber optical module has one more optical fiber transmission than single fiber optical module, so the total wiring cost will be relatively high. The single fiber optical module is very suitable for long-distance backbone and man applications, and its wiring cost will be relatively low.
Gigabit optical modules are mainly used in Gigabit switches, Gigabit routers, servers, firewalls and other devices. Of course, they can also be used in storage devices, because gigabit optical modules not only meet the Ethernet standard, but also are compatible with the fibre channel standard.
