What is the use of the FEF function on the fiber media converter?
Fiber media converters are usually used in pairs to extend the transmission distance of copper cabling systems. But in the process of using, if one side of the link fails, the other side of the media converter will continue to work, and will not send an error report to the administrator. In this case, fiber media converter with FEF function can perfectly solve this problem. Next, we will introduce how the FEF function works.
The full name of FEF is Far End Fault, which means remote failure. It conforms to IEEE 802.3u standard protocol and can detect the failure of remote link in the network. The fiber media converter with FEF function, the network administrator can easily detect the fault on the fiber media converter link. When an optical fiber link error is detected, the optical fiber media converter on one side will send a remote fault signal through the optical fiber to inform the optical fiber transceiver on the other side of the fault. Then, the two copper links connected to the fiber link are automatically disconnected. By using the fiber optic media converter with FEF, the fault on the link can be easily detected and eliminated immediately. By cutting off the faulty link and sending the remote fault back to the fiber media converter, the data transmission to the faulty link can be prevented.
However, ETU-LINK reminds you that if you want to enable the FEF function on the optical fiber media converter, you should choose a pair of electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electric optical fiber transceivers instead of using optical-to-optical optical fiber media converter. Moreover, the optical fiber transceivers on both sides should choose the same brand and model.
