What are the differences between MPO and MTP connectors?
In this blog, ETU-LINK will introduce the difference between MPO and MTP connectors? First, let's learn about what MPO and MTP connectors are respectively.
MPO is the abbreviation of Multi-fiber Push On. It is the first generation of multi-core optical fiber connector designed by NTT company in Japan. Its main industrial standard isIEC-61754-7, and the current national standard is YD/T1272.5-2009, the American standard is EIA/TIA-604-5.
MTP is the abbreviation of Multi-fiber Termination Push-on in English. It is a trademark registered by US Conec for its own MPO connector. It has done a lot of optimization for MPO connector through multiple innovative designs and has its own patent protection. Therefore, MTP connector has better mechanical and optical properties than ordinary MPO connector. MTP connector fully conforms to the professional standards of all MPO connectors.
Next, let's talk about the specific differences between MPO and MTP connectors. The first is the comparison of plug-in reliability test. After the MTP connector is plugged and unplugged for 600 times, the end face near the guide hole is basically intal ,but after the MPO connector is plugged and unplugged 500 times, the end face near the guide hole is obviously damage.
The second is the spring design of MTP connector. Compared with MPO connector, it can give the ribbon optical fiber space to the greatest extent, so as to reduce the damage of spring activity to the optical fiber during plug-in.
Then, the guide pin fixing clip designed by MTP connector can prevent the loss of guide pin. Moreover, the MTP connector allows the MT plug core to float in the outer frame, which improves the mechanical properties. In this way, when two MT are plugged in, a certain external force will not change the physical contact between the two end faces, and the optical performance will not be degraded as much as possible.
MPO / MTP optical fiber patch cord can be multimode or single mode. Multimode MPO / MTP optical fiber patch cord can be used in optical modules above 40G, such as 40G SR4 / eSR4 multimode optical module, 100G SR4 multimode optical module, and single mode MPO optical fiber patch cord can be used in 40G PSM4 and 100G PSM4.
